Ntando Duma is a celebrated South African actress and television personality, widely admired for her work as a presenter and her roles on screen. She gained early fame as a host on e.tv’s youth programming block "Craz-e," particularly on "Craz-e World Live." She also became well-known for her role as Zinzi Dandala on the popular soap opera "Rhythm City." In 2023, she took on a prominent role in "Shaka Ilembe," showcasing her acting talent, and appeared in "Awkward Dates (ZA)" the same year.
However, Ntando Duma has faced controversy. She was involved in a "race-row" incident after a live-streamed video showed her using racially offensive language toward a woman who questioned her about parking in a disabled parking space. This incident sparked public debate and brought media attention to her actions outside of her acting and television career.
Early Life
The actress Thando Duma, who is 29 years old as of 2024, was born on 29 August 1995. Ntando Duma was born in Orange Farm, a township in Johannesburg, Gauteng. She grew up in this township, approximately 45 km from Johannesburg, raised by her mother and grandmother. She has three siblings, including her sister, Thando Duma. Her father left the family when she was three years old and passed away in 2008.
Growing up, Ntando was actively involved in community activities, which fostered her love for media. She participated in Love Life activities held at different schools in Orange Farm, which provided a platform for her to nurture her passion. Later, her family moved to Alexandra, where she completed her primary and secondary education.
Ntando Duma completed her primary schooling in Alexandra before attending Kwabhekilanga High School. After finishing high school, she pursued her media career aspirations by enrolling in Boston Media College, where she earned a Diploma in Media Studies.
Personal Life
There is some confusion regarding Ntando Duma’s sister, Thando Duma, as her sibling often refers to herself as Ntando Duma's twin. However, they are not twins; they are simply close siblings. Ntando Duma's sister, Thando Duma, is also known by her professional name, Lady Amar. Lady Amar is an entrepreneur and award-winning DJ who has made a significant impact on the industry since emerging a few years ago. Besides Thando Duma, the actress has another sister named Lindo Duma.
In May 2024, fans speculated that Ntando was engaged after she posted a picture of a ring on Instagram. The well-known actress keeps her relationships with boyfriends and potential husbands private. Ntando Duma has a child with popular South African DJ, Junior DeRocka. Their daughter, Sbahle Mzizi, was born on June 28, 2017. Unfortunately, their relationship was somewhat toxic, and they ended it in 2017 following months of reported abuse, rumors, and unhappiness.
Ntando has taken to social media to share her experiences, alleging she suffered abuse at the hands of Junior. She has accused him of both emotional and physical abuse, claiming she once caught him with another woman on December 25, 2016, and that he physically assaulted her. Ntando has also accused Junior of neglecting their daughter, stating that he chooses to spend time with other children instead. Junior, in response, has denied the accusations, calling them unfounded and malicious. He claims that he supports his daughter financially, even posting proof of money transfers to Ntando for their daughter’s needs.
Ntando’s mother, Kayisile Zulu, and she share a strong bond. Ntando has publicly praised her mother’s accomplishments, including her honor’s degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa). However, Ntando has a strained relationship with her father, whose identity remains unknown. In a 2016 TimesLIVE report, Ntando shared the pain of growing up in an abusive home, witnessing her father physically assault her mother. After an incident where her father allegedly set their Soweto shack on fire, Kayisile managed to help Ntando and her siblings escape through a window. She then moved the family to Orange Farm when Ntando was six to escape the abuse, leading to an improved life for them.
In January 2022, News24 reported that the celebrity photographic agency Pixel Kollective notified Ntando of copyright infringement after she posted photos taken by the agency on her social media account.
Career
Ntando Duma started her career in the entertainment industry by distributing Vine videos. As she became more comfortable in front of the camera, she pursued hosting opportunities and began by hosting shows like "Sistahood," "Craz-e," and "ShizNiz." She also worked as a model, participating in the 2015 and 2017 Soweto Fashion Week runway shows.
After gaining confidence in hosting, Ntando pursued acting and landed a role on the popular South African soap opera “Rhythm City” in 2014. She played the role of Zinzi Dandala, quickly becoming a fan favorite. In addition to her acting career, Ntando worked as a model, featuring in the 2015 Soweto Fashion Week.
Ntando is best known as a TV host on the popular music channel MTV Base Africa. The lively presenter also hosted the show "Gqom Nation." She collaborated with the comedian, musician, and MC Robot Boii as presenters for the Channel O Lockdown Quarantine Party, which began when the world went into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2020, Ntando joined the cast of the popular South African telenovela “The Queen,” where she played the role of Mpho Sebata. However, in June 2021, it was announced that she would be leaving the production. Despite this setback, Ntando has remained a beloved figure in the South African entertainment industry.
Community Work
Ntando Duma is passionate about giving back to her community. She is the founder of the Inspire A Teen SA Foundation, which aims to nurture and cement the confidence of young models and provides education on cat-walking and various essential modeling services.
One of the ways the foundation supports the community is by donating matric dresses to Kwa Bhekilanga Secondary School in Alexandra, Sandton. In an interview, Ntando shared, "It’s a foundation that I started back in 2010, and what we aim to do is give back to the community. We collect matric dresses from Spectacular, designers, and other sources, and we send them to the school. I’m also a mentor to a lot of girls at the school, and we give them tips on how to carry themselves and dress well."
Ntando’s foundation has inspired and uplifted many young girls in her community. By enabling them to attend their matric dances with confidence and feel beautiful, Ntando has made a positive impact on the lives of many young women.
