Yuvir Pillay, born on 15 July 1989, and better known by his stage name Sketchy Bongo, is a South African record producer, DJ, and songwriter hailing from Durban. Sketchy Bongo has collaborated with prominent artists such as AKA, Da Les, Shekhinah, and Aewon Wolf. One of his most notable features is the ski mask he frequently wears, which has become his signature look.
Bongo has the distinction of being the only South African producer to have his own feature on MTV Base. His collaboration with Shekhinah resulted in the hit single "Let You Know," which helped secure him a record deal with Ultra Music and Sony Music. Over the years, he has produced several chart-topping hits that have received widespread airplay on both South African and international TV and radio stations.
Life and Career
Sketchy Bongo, who is currently aged 35, grew up in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His passion for music production began at the early age of 13. Initially, he focused on hip-hop, drawing influence from renowned producers like Pharrell Williams and Kanye West. As his skills evolved, Sketchy Bongo expanded his repertoire to include house and pop music.
He is also a member of a creative collective known as Wolf Pack, which includes a mix of producers, artists, graphic designers, rappers, and kwaito musicians. Other notable members include Aewon Wolf and Kyle Deutch.
Sketchy Bongo's breakthrough came with his hit collaboration "Let You Know" with Shekhinah, which earned him international recognition after making it onto the BBC Radio 1 playlist in the UK. This success helped secure his record deal with Ultra Music.
Over the years, he has worked with a diverse group of prominent South African artists including Aewon Wolf, Locnville, Shekhinah, Kyle Deutch, Danny K, Nasty C, Tresor, Jimmy Nevis, and AKA.
